About Us

Musical Shape Shifters

The musicians of Kanabash Barn grew up together in the same Cape Town, South Africa neighborhood and bonded over their shared passion of the sound, rhythm and the music of the 70s. Kanabash Barn was born in Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa in the shadows of the Downstairs Room, Kantey residence, where musicians used to flock for wild electric jams before Mike Kantey’s father would cut the electricity at two o’clock in the morning. The name Kanabash Barn is a combination of the last names of five friends: Mike Kantey - congas, Dave Attwell - sax, John & Roger Bashew - guitar, bass and Peter Barnett - drums

The band evolved with Charlie Catzavelos on piano and vocals, Mark Ginsberg on guitar and sax, Joe Feldwick-Davis on sax and flute, Gary Horn on sax and flute, Clive Staegman on saxes and Terri Cohen on vocals. David Bass, of the band Feedback, played keyboards in one the band’s incarnations and he will be reprising those duties when the band performs again.

Born of One-Nighters

Kanabash Barn found success in consistently placing second or third in many of Cape Town’s famous Battle Of The Bands competitions. This was the early 70s and the music landscape was rich. Kanabash Barn played music by bands of the times such as Traffic, Osibisa, The Beatles, Free and many more.

OUR 50-YEAR REUNION SHOW WAS A BIG SUCCESS!

In the early 70’s Kanabash Barn were regular finalists in Cape Town’s famous Battle Of The Bands shows. In 1972 we played at our school for SACS Panorama Week. Fifty years later, on 2 March 2023, we were back playing at the class of 1973 50th reunion. This was a free event, open to all. If you were there you witnessed a great night at Fat Harry’s Reloaded. It was an evening of great music performed by some of Cape Town’s best musicians - young and somewhat older!

Live 50-yr Anniversary Show Cape Town 1st Set

A fantastic job by Clive Read of shooting, editing and producing this video. We rocked Cape Town in the 70s … and we rocked again 50 years later!

Live 50-yr Anniversary Show Cape Town 2nd Set

The second set we played was a fun collection of jazz, soul, blues, funk and rock tunes and an original by David Bass titled Dancing At The Bus Stop
